Mark Wessels lives in the state of South Carolina and has a dog called Bucky.
In January 2012, Mark gave Bucky to his father who lives in the state of Virginia,
almost 500 miles away. Mark was sad when he said good-bye to his three
year-old dog, but there was nothing he could do. The new apartment building
that he moved to did not allow dogs to live there. However, not long after
Bucky moved to Virginia, he disappeared. Mark’s father searched
everywhere for him, but he couldn’t find the dog. Where was Bucky? Bucky
was back in South Carolina! When Brett Gallagher found him six months later,
he was very thin, but he was okay, even after a journey of almost 500 miles.
Mr. Gallagher brought the dog to an animal hospital where a nurse found a
small computer chip in the dog’s ear. The chip had Mark Wessel’s phone
number, and soon the two were back together again. Mark was very happy to
see his dog again. He said, “I thought I was going to cry.” No one is really sure
how Bucky found his way back to South Carolina. Mark, who now lives with
Bucky, says his dog is “just really smart”.
